The New Luxury (Healing & Wellness) with the World’s First Supercritical Makwaen Oil Massage

Introduction: The Spice that Defines the North

For generations, Makwaen (botanically classified as zanthoxylum limonella) has been the aromatic heartbeat of Northern Thailand, known as the King of Lanna Spices. Once hand-foraged from high up in the  mountains, then entering the royal kitchen of the Lanna Kingdom, makwaen is inseparable from the Northern Thai identity. In fact, it’s bright floral-citrus bouquet [yes, from a pepper!] and mild tingling numbness it brings may trigger a regional pride & nostalgia, and offer an ancient alternative for the mala-fatigued. Makwaen also resonated with Thais in general as it also entered the central Siam Royal kitchens.

But at ASMR Massage and Wellness (Chiang Mai), we looked at this humble forest peppercorn and saw something more: an untapped botanical powerhouse. We asked ourselves a bold question: Can a culinary hyper-local heritage spice be transformed into a world-class luxury wellness experience?

As recently highlighted by Chiang Mai Citylife, we have done exactly that. We are proud to introduce the world’s very first Makwaen Oil Massage, an absolute sensory revolution bridging ancient wisdom with high-tech execution.

The Superior-Tech Approach: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction

Ancient wisdom is powerful, but turning a complex distinct peppercorn into a smooth, skin-safe, ultra-luxurious spa oil required elite science. Traditional extraction methods like steam distillation or chemical solvents often degrade delicate compounds or leave toxic chemical residues behind.

ASMR signed an official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Food Innovation and Packaging Centre (FIN) at Chiang Mai University [CMU] and their faculty of Agro-Industry — consistently ranked among Thailand's top 3 universities. Together, we deployed an advanced chemical engineering milestone on makwaen: Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (scCO₂) Extraction.

This state-of-the-art method uses pressurised, recycled carbon dioxide held at a specific temperature where it acts as both a gas and a liquid. It is quite a rare approach in mainstream wellness skincare — with an estimated fewer than 5% of the global skincare market utilising it, primarily due to the significant  equipment costs and technical expertise required. Outside of medical-grade cannabis extraction, it is rarely seen.

By using this high-tech method, we unlock unparalleled wellness advantages:

  • 100% Solvent-less & Pure: Because CO₂ simply evaporates safely back into the air once pressure is released, our oil is entirely free of chemical solvents, heavy metals, or synthetic residues. It is the cleanest possible product for your skin.

  • Full-Spectrum Power: Traditional heat extraction destroys fragile elements. Supercritical extraction operates at low temperatures, perfectly preserving the complete, full-spectrum matrix of volatile aromatics and beneficial compounds (like limonene) inherent to the wild Zanthoxylum limonella berry.

  • Eco-Friendly Integrity: The CO₂ used is entirely recycled and low-carbon, aligning perfectly with our sustainable wellness philosophy.

The scientific team at FIN successfully isolated these therapeutic essential compounds while tempering the harsh, irritating elements. The result?

An oil that Chiang Mai Citylife describes as

"strikingly smooth from the first touch, gliding rather than dragging, and absorbing into the skin almost completely... no greasy film, no tackiness."

ASMR makwaen massage oil delivers deep tissue relief with the silky, clean elegance of premium global skincare. The quality speaks for itself, completely absorbed, leaving one with a oil massage experience without any greasiness. Have you ever come across an oil massage free from stickiness or stubborn oiliness?

Bridging Two Eras: Scientific Validation vs. Lanna Heritage

What makes our makwaen (zanthoxylum limonella) oil so significant is how modern, elite peer-reviewed science validated the centuries-old text of Traditional Thai Medicine. When we map out its benefits, the alignment between ancient healers and top global universities is most compelling:

Benefits

Proven Modern Science

(Peer-Reviewed)

Traditional Thai &

Folk Medicine

Inflammation & Muscle Relief

Powerful Anti-inflammatory Response: Clinically proven to suppress severe pro-inflammatory cellular pathways in world-leading journals like Nature Scientific Reports.

Analgesic & Anti-pyretic: Long applied topically by Lanna healers as an anti-inflammatory extract to soothe muscle rheumatism, reduce joint aches, and cool down body fevers. See Journal of Natural Products Discovery.

Cellular Health & Defense

Antioxidant & Anti-tumour: Peer-reviewed studies in Plants (by MDPI Switzerland) and National Institutes of Health [NIH] (a part of the U.S. Department of Health) confirm a rich profile of bioactive phenolics that aggressively scavenge free radicals and exhibit anti-tumour potential.

Longevity & Protection: Utilized as a protective folk-medicine remedy to guard the body against environmental stressors and support overall vitality.

Sanitization & Immunity

Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial: Rigorously proven to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth, helping to clarify, cleanse, and protect the skin barrier.

Sudorific & Carminative: Used traditionally as a purifying agent to induce sweating, clear toxins, and treat dental caries or skin imperfections.

Internal Comfort & Soothing

Gastrointestinal Repair: Landmark studies in Phytomedicine (by ScienceDirect, Netherlands) show Zanthoxylum extracts markedly reduce severe intestinal inflammation, diarrhea, and mucosal bleeding.

Stomach & Digestive Aid: Universally prescribed in traditional Northern recipes to treat stomach aches, dispel gas, and settle digestive distress. See Phytomedicine (by ScienceDirect, Netherlands).

From Luxury to Comfort Food: Our Approachable Makwaen Fried Chicken

While we are elevating Makwaen to global luxury standards in our spa rooms, we believe heritage should always remain approachable and grounded. In recent years, fine-dining establishments have turned Makwaen into complex, sometimes unapproachable culinary creations.

We chose a different path at ASMR — we paired our high-tech spa innovations with an absolute, cross-cultural comfort food favourite: Makwaen Fried Chicken.

Fried chicken is universally loved across cultures. By tossing crisp, golden, juicy fried chicken in our signature house Makwaen marinate, we bring the tingle of the Lanna forest directly to your taste buds. Unlike regular pepper, Zanthoxylum limonella features a stunningly complex, multi-layered citrus profile—bursting with notes of bright lemongrass-clementine, deep kaffir lime zest, and a wild woody undertone that balances the rich savoury crunch. It is crispy, addictive, comforting, and perfectly captures our philosophy: sensory mindfulness that is deeply premium yet completely accessible.

Miscellaneous

Marking her story of intrigue, Jinda, the lead in Mae Yua (also known as The Empress of Ayodhaya) was framed for causing the miscarriage of another consort using makwaen. While untrue (for makwaen & other peppers), & basically a fictional dramatisation, the initial #1 Netflix blockbuster faced it’s own controversy surrounding a scene with a black cat (ironically an auspicious in Thai culture; and Japan & Egypt).

Makwaen (& Zanthoxylum genus) makes lips tingle at around 50Hz, increasing blood flow right under the skin, and triggering salivation that aids digestion and intensifies flavours. The mild numbness helps you handle hotter chillies too. Apparently a similar frequency is often used for physiotherapy.

Perhaps that's why the makwaen spice could just be Thailand's feel good buzz, that smells like a bright-eyed delightful smile.
